Hamilton Southeastern’s Christian Leffler threw a five-inning no-hitter on the road April 23 as the Class 4A third-ranked Royals absolutely stunned undefeated 4A No. 6 Brownsburg in a marquee matchup of Hoosier Crossroads Conference schools.
Leffler (1-0) struck out seven and walked one for HSE, which improved to 13-2 overall and 4-1 in HCC play. The Royals scored 10 runs in the top of the third and four more in the fourth as Brownsburg (11-1, 4-1) committed six errors on a drizzly Friday evening.
Four Southeastern players – center fielder Rob Stein, catcher Jake Straub, Leffler, and first baseman J.T. Timmer – collected two hits apiece in the game, while shortstop Zach Starr had a team-high three runs batted in and Stein smacked the contest’s only home run.
In addition to taking full advantage of the half-dozen fielding miscues, coach Scott Johnson’s Royals pounded out 12 hits against three Brownsburg pitchers. Starter Matt Bowman took the loss for the Bulldogs after surrendering eight runs (all unearned) and walking three in just 2 1/3 innings.
Brownsburg, the 2005 4A state champion, had entered the game averaging 10 runs per game.
The two teams will get together again Saturday morning at Southeastern, weather permitting.
